New insight from Advance HE and Wonkhe about what it takes to lead change in higher education when the environment is tough is available in the form of a report published in July 2024.
This report is the result of three round table discussions in June and July 2024, convened by Advance HE and Wonkhe, with senior leaders, heads of schools, and governors from diverse higher education institutions across the UK and internationally. The theme of the round tables was leadership dynamics at a time of strategic change and challenge.
A selection of the key insights that emerged include:
Agility and quick decision-making - Leaders must be able to respond swiftly to changes in the environment and make decisions even when not all information is available. Delays can lead to stagnation.
Balancing consultation and action - While consultation with staff is important in universities, leaders need to balance discussion with decisive action to avoid slowing down necessary changes.
Managing risk and innovation - Leaders should cultivate an understanding of when to take risks. In volatile times, avoiding change can be as risky as taking bold steps toward innovation.
Encouraging collaboration - Breaking down silos and fostering teamwork across departments is crucial. Leaders should promote a unified sense of purpose within the institution.
Building trust - Trust between governors, executive teams, and staff is essential. Effective leadership requires confidence in each other's integrity and commitment to the institution’s mission.
Peer reflection and support - Leaders benefit from opportunities to reflect with peers and share experiences, which can provide valuable insights and relieve the pressures of leadership.
